In 1948, as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) was established, Kim Il-Sung emerged as its first premier. Kim's power stemmed from his role in leading the Korean Workers' Party (KWP) during the Korean War (1950-1953).

Background
Following the establishment of North Korea, parliamentary elections were held on August 25, 1948, to elect the members of the 1st Supreme People's Assembly (SPA). The SPA served as the legislative body of the DPRK.
Results
The elections were organized by the KWP, which secured a dominant majority in the SPA. Kim Il-Sung became the Chairman of the SPA, further consolidating his power.
Significance
The 1948 parliamentary elections marked a significant step in the establishment of North Korea as a state. It provided the KWP with a legitimate mandate and helped to legitimize Kim Il-Sung's government.
